Jaffna Fort

Jaffna Fort is one of the best-preserved colonial forts in Sri Lanka, located near the Jaffna lagoon. Originally built by the Portuguese in 1618 and later expanded by the Dutch in the 17th century, the star-shaped fort showcases impressive European military architecture. Surrounded by a wide moat and thick stone walls, it offers panoramic views of the lagoon and surrounding town. Inside the fort, visitors can explore ruins of old churches, administrative buildings, and historic structures that reflect its colonial past. Despite damage during the civil war, Jaffna Fort remains a powerful symbol of resilience, history, and cultural heritage in Northern Sri Lanka.
