The Nine Arch Bridge

The Nine Arch Bridge, also known as the “Bridge in the Sky,” is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks, nestled in the lush green hills of Ella in the Central Highlands. This colonial-era railway viaduct was completed in 1919–1921 and stands as a stunning example of early 20th-century engineering, built entirely from stone, brick, and cement without steel reinforcement. Surrounded by tea plantations, jungle foliage, and misty mountains, the bridge’s nine graceful arches offer breathtaking views and unforgettable photo opportunities, especially when the famous Kandy–Ella train rumbles across the track.
